Yakinaran

Yakinaran (Citrus acida or a local wild lime variety), also known in Sinhala as “යකි නාරන්,” is a wild citrus plant native to Sri Lanka and parts of South Asia. It resembles a small lime or bitter orange and is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and folk remedies.

Plant Basis:

  • Yakinaran grows as a small tree or shrub with thorny branches.
  • Its fruits are small, green to yellow, round, and extremely sour and bitter.
  • The leaves, fruit, peel, and seeds are all used in traditional medicine.
  • Its scent is sharp and citrusy, often stronger than regular lime or lemon.

Soursop

Soursop (Annona muricata), also known as Graviola or “Katu Anoda” in Sinhala, is a tropical plant native to the Americas but widely grown in Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. The tree produces large, green, spiky fruits, but its leaves are especially valued in traditional herbal medicine.

  • Soursop leaves are dark green, smooth, and oval-shaped with a pointed tip.

Pandan

Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius), known as “Rampa” in Sinhala, is a tropical plant popular across Asia for its distinct aroma and health properties. It’s widely grown in home gardens and often used in both culinary and traditional medicine.

  • Pandan is a grassy plant with long, narrow, blade-like bright green leaves.
  • The leaves contain natural aromatic compounds, especially 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, which gives it a pleasant, sweet fragrance.

  • The curry leaf plant is a small tree or shrub, growing up to 6-10 feet tall.
  • Its leaves are shiny, aromatic, and deeply divided into smaller leaflets arranged in a feather-like pattern.
  • The leaves are typically used fresh, although they can also be dried for preservation and use in cooking or herbal remedies.
